Vilnius cinema to open Lithuania’s first IMAX screen

BNS 2025.09.02 13:54

The Forum Cinemas movie theatre chain will open Lithuania’s first movie hall with IMAX technology in Vilnius in December.

It will be located in the Forum Cinemas’ largest Vingis multiplex, which is currently undergoing renovation. According to Gintaras Plytnikas, director of the movie theatre chain’s Lithuanian branch, the cost of the work may exceed 1 million euros.

“It took quite a long time for it [IMAX technology] to reach us because people’s purchasing power is not sufficient for a business plan,” he told reporters at a press conference held at the multiplex.

According to David King, vice-president of film distribution at IMAX, the technology stands out for its exceptionally large screens, extremely vivid images, and powerful sound system.

“This auditorium will be equipped with top-of-the-line laser projectors. The seats will be positioned closer to the screen to ensure a better experience,” King said.

According to Plytnikas, tickets for screenings in this hall will be more expensive. The number of seats will also be reduced to 400, from 645.

“Compared to regular prices, which range from 5 to 11 euros, [tickets for IMAX screenings] may be more expensive by 4 euros,” he said.

According to King, IMAX also hopes to introduce the technology in other movie theatres in the country.

“I think it will all depend on the success of the first location,” he said.

Currently, there is only one movie theatre in the Baltic countries that has IMAX technology, in the Latvian capital Riga.
