Lithuania’s average monthly gross wages grew 8.7% in the second quarter compared with a year earlier, reaching 2,387 euros, the State Data Agency said Tuesday.

Compared with the first quarter, gross pay rose 2.1%. Public-sector wages averaged 2,533.9 euros, up 4.5% from the previous quarter, while private-sector pay stood at 2,325.6 euros, a 1.1% increase. Year-on-year growth was 8.7% and 8.6%, respectively.

After taxes, the average monthly net wage was 1,461.3 euros, up 1.7% from the first quarter and 8% from a year earlier. Public-sector workers took home an average of 1,544.9 euros, a quarterly increase of 4.2%, while private-sector employees earned 1,430.2 euros, 0.9% more than the previous quarter. Both sectors posted annual growth of 8.1%.

The real wage index in the second quarter rose 1.3% compared with the previous quarter and 4.1% year-on-year. In the public sector, the index was up 3.8% quarter-on-quarter, while in the private sector it increased 0.5%.

Wages grew the most in agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.4%), as well as in water supply, wastewater treatment, waste management and remediation (5.9%). The steepest decline was in finance and insurance, where wages fell 3.7%.

The agency said wage changes were influenced by higher work volumes, seasonal fluctuations and other factors.

The number of employees in Lithuania grew by 4,900, or 0.4%, from the first quarter, including 1,300 in the public sector and 3,600 in the private sector. Compared with a year earlier, the workforce increased by 6,400, or 0.5%, driven mainly by a 1.6% rise in public-sector jobs.
