A powerful thunderstorm is expected to develop over parts of southern Lithuania at noon on Thursday and spread across much of the country’s southern and eastern regions, the Hydrometeorological Service has warned.
The forecast includes short but intense downpours, thunderstorms, hail, and strong wind gusts of 15 to 20 meters per second, with some areas possibly experiencing gusts up to 25 meters per second.
The highest risk of severe storms is in Vilnius, Utena, and Alytus counties. Alytus was the first to be hit, with heavy rain clouds settling over the area.

Residents in Alytus and nearby Lazdijai have shared videos on social media showing torrential rain and deteriorating weather conditions.
Authorities are urging residents to secure windows and doors, remove or tie down lightweight objects in yards, balconies, and other open areas, and avoid parking cars under tall trees.
“Do not stand under trees, near billboards, power lines, lightning rods, or metal towers,” the Hydrometeorological Service said in a public advisory. “Avoid open areas and bodies of water. If a storm strikes while you’re driving, stay highly focused, keep both hands on the wheel, and adjust your speed based on the road and weather conditions.”
