Passenger and freight train traffic between Vilnius and Klaipėda will be suspended from Monday through Sunday due to repairs to the 100-year-old Taučiai railway bridge in the district of Šiauliai, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LTG) has said.
“Traffic on the shortened line Vilnius-Šiauliai will be intensified throughout the week, with 6 to 12 trains per day, depending on the day of the week, and more trains on weekends,” the state-owned railway company said in a press release.
Freight trains will be rerouted via Pagėgiai, which may result in travel times being extended by up to 24 hours compared to usual.
As part of the repairs, the bridge will be lifted to replace the bearings and lay concrete on new bearing support points, LTG said.
Michail Lipkin, CEO of Leonhard Weiss Lithuania, the contractor, has said that efforts will be made to complete the work and resume train services as quickly as possible.
The Taučiai railway bridge was built in 1925 and is listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage.
