A Moscow-Kaliningrad transit train bearing unauthorised Russian inscriptions was allowed to cross into Lithuania only after the train staff wiped off the symbols, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Thursday.

The train with Russian army symbols and provocative inscriptions arrived at the Kena railway border checkpoint from Belarus on Wednesday.

Lithuanian border guards noticed the letter Z, the symbol of Russia’s war in Ukraine, and a ZOV inscription spray-painted in black paint on one of the carriages. The adjacent carriage also had an inscription in Russian saying “Vilnius – Russia’s city”.

The train staff could not explain where and how these inscriptions appeared. They were instructed by the Lithuanian border guards to immediately remove the inscriptions and warned that otherwise, the passengers would have to change to other carriages as the ones with inscriptions would be unhitched and not allowed to enter Lithuania.

The inscriptions were removed by the train staff under the border guards’ supervision. After all mandatory passenger screening procedures, the train was allowed to continue its transit through Lithuania to its final destination.
