Lithuania's presidential office is launching an interinstitutional discussion on promoting the German language nationwide.
The President's Office has submitted proposals to the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport aimed at strengthening and widening German language teaching across Lithuania.
The initiative includes encouraging pupils to choose German as their first or second foreign language, expanding German studies at universities, establishing an international school with German as the language of instruction, and implementing broader promotional measures.
The office also intends to contribute to the development of a national programme for German language education.
The push reflects the significant growth in Lithuanian-German relations in recent years, particularly in defence. Germany has committed to stationing a full brigade, around 5,000 troops, in Lithuania by 2027, which would mark the first permanent deployment of German forces abroad since the Second World War.
Broader cultural ties are also on the agenda: a Lithuanian cultural season is planned in Germany for 2027-28.
