Two-thirds of Lithuanians think Harris presidency would be better for them – poll

Two-thirds of Lithuanians believe that a victory of Vice President Kamala Harris in the US presidential election would be more beneficial for Lithuania than that of her rival Donald Trump, according to the results of a Norstat poll published on Tuesday by 15min.lt.

According to the poll, 66 percent of the respondents were in favour of Harris, 12 percent preferred Trump, while 22 percent had no opinion or thought there was no difference between the two candidates when it came to Lithuania.

“This is probably primarily due to Trump’s controversial personality, ambiguous statements about NATO allies and Russia, as well as the generally rather negative media coverage of Trump,” Linas Kojala, director of the Centre for East European Studies in Vilius, commented on the results.

According to the analyst, many respondents probably know little about Harris, but she remains the only alternative to Trump.

Norstat surveyed 1,000 people aged between 18 and 74 online between August 28 and September 5.

In the US, polls show that the two presidential candidates are evenly matched, with Trump still supported by around half of the electorate, despite the fact that the Republican is a convicted felon and played a role in the unprecedented attempt to reverse the 2020 election results.

Harris, who only entered the presidential race when President Joe Biden abruptly withdrew in July, has quickly gone from a low-profile vice-presidential contender to a serious contender, but the polls show that she has not made a major breakthrough, so the race remains tight.
