A landslide occurred on the southern slope of Gediminas Hill after a day-long downpour on Monday. However, it does not pose a threat to the stability of the hill, the National Museum of Lithuania, which oversees the site, said.

According to the institution, the landslide is relatively small, about nine metres wide and more than 20 metres long.

“The landslide is of superficial soil and does not threaten the stability of the hill. The emergency response work under the permanent emergency contract will start immediately,” the statement said.

The museum says it is constantly monitoring weather forecasts and inspecting all the slopes of the hill.

There are no soil deformations on the remaining slopes, according to the National Museum.

The condition of Gediminas Hill remains vulnerable to extreme weather, pending the implementation of a the long-term solution.

This year, the National Museum of Lithuania has already signed a preliminary contract with the firm Rekreacinė Statyba for the final works to stabilise the south-eastern part of Gediminas Hill.

The work is expected to take three years and cost around 13.4 million euros. The museum is currently negotiating with ministries to finance the project.

The condition of the hill has been a matter of concern since major landslides in February 2016. At that time, it was temporarily closed to visitors.
