Discovered explosive disrupts trains services in Lithuania

Some train services were interrupted in Lithuania after an explosive device was found near a railway bridge in the central town of Jonava on Thursday morning.

The explosive was destroyed in the afternoon and all train services resumed.

Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LTG) announced at around 13:20 that train traffic on the Vilnius-Klaipėda and Kaunas-Šiauliai routes had resumed and passengers were continuing their journey.

The train services were temporarily suspended at around noon due to a suspicious object found in Taurostos Street near the railway bridge in Jonava.

Rūta Struzeckytė, a spokeswoman for the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, told BNS that the object was found during excavation works at around 10:25 and the plan Shield was introduced.

The spokeswoman said at around 13:30 that the explosive device had been destroyed on the spot.
