To beef up the protection of the Klaipėda’s floating LNG terminal, Lithuania is buying systems to monitor potential underwater threats.
"At the end of the year, we will have an underwater capability that will allow us to monitor various unmanned objects underwater and manage those risks," Laurynas Kasčiūnas, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence (CNSD), said on Friday.
The MP noted that Lithuania is purchasing security systems to protect not only the LNG terminal, but also other companies in the energy sector.
Concerns over the security of critical infrastructure arose earlier this month after the Balticconnector gas pipeline linking Finland and Estonia was damaged and put out of use.
Kasčiūnas the purchases had been planned before the incident.
According to the MP, Lithuania’s authorities are seeking to protect the entire seaport of Klaipėda.
"This includes both land and underwater entrances to the port," said Kasčiūnas. "We are now working out a strategy for generating capabilities to ensure protection in this area."
