The first wave of gusty winds and thunderstorms struck Lithuania last night, with clouds and intense thunderstorms moving across the country from the south. Forecasters expect a second round of storms on Wednesday, with the first heavy precipitation after midday.
"Almost 10,000 lightning strikes were recorded overnight. The most thunderstorms occurred in Suvalkija, around Jurbarkas, west of Kaunas and in central Lithuania," the country's Hydrometeorological Service (LHMT) said on Wednesday.
According to the meteorologists, the most precipitation during the last day fell in Klaipėda, Jurbarkas and Rietavas in western Lithuania. Firefighters were called 12 times to remove trees blocking roads.
"Today will be stormy weather in Lithuania," the weather forecasters said on Wednesday, urging people to beware of strong winds, possible hail and thunderstorms.
Heavy rains will hit Lithuania on Wednesday midday. Brief showers are also expected in many areas, accompanied by thunderstorms. Temperatures will rise to 20–31C degrees.
On Thursday, short showers are expected in many districts, with heavy rain in some places, accompanied by thunderstorms, with south-westerly, westerly winds gusting to 15–18 m/s. The temperatures will rise to 19–24C degrees.
More rain is expected on Friday, with temperatures dropping to 16–21C degrees.
