Regulators perplexed by Belarusian radio that can be picked up in Vilnius

The Belarusian radio station Radio Mir can be picked up in the Lithuanian capital. Regulators believe it should be blocked, although admit they have no ways to do it.

Rimantas Bagdzevičius, chairman of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission, has told LRT RADIO that blocking radio signals coming from the neighbouring country is impossible.

“Of course, it is not normal. Radio waves spread as far as they do. Those radio stations, those radio transmitters are in a hostile foreign country, I don’t know what can be done,” he said.

Vilnius lies just 30 kilometres from the Belarusian border and around 170 kilometres from its capital, Minsk.

Darius Kuliešius, vice-chairman of the Communications Regulatory Authority, has said that the agency will perform checks why Radio Mir can be picked up in Vilnius.

“There will be inspections, and if that radio station is broadcasting within the established and long-agreed frequency bands and powers, there is no violation. Hopefully, with the change in the weather, we will not be able to hear it much longer,” he said.

Radio Mir says it is covering news in cooperation with Belarusian authorities.
