Brussels welcomes Baltic deal to speed up decoupling from Russian power grid

On Thursday, the European Commission welcomed the three Baltic countries' agreement to synchronise their electricity grids with the continental European system by February 2025.

European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said in a press release that the agreement by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia "will enable us to complete the full integration of the three Baltic states into the EU electricity grid almost one year earlier than previously intended".

Simson said the energy grid synchronisation "has been a priority EU energy infrastructure project for the Commission for many years, receiving substantial EU funding, and will continue to receive support until it is completed".

Under the 2018 agreement signed between the Baltic leaders and the European Commission, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia must synchronise their grids with continental European power networks by the end of 2025.

The three countries are now part of the Soviet-era BRELL network that also includes Belarus and is controlled by Moscow. Vilnius has been seeking to push the decoupling date forward following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.

However, Latvia and Estonia objected to Lithuania’s proposed 2024 deadline due to increased costs.
