Starting in August, public transport in Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city, will no longer stop at an empty bus stop. Passengers wanting to alight will have to press a “stop” button.
Passengers waiting for a bus or trolleybus will not have to raise their hand, but they will have to step out of the bus stop close to the road for the driver to notice them and stop accordingly.
Kaunas is the first municipality to activate the “stop” buttons. They are available on all Kaunas buses and trolleybuses.
The changes were introduced to save on fuel and maintenance costs, as well as to speed up journeys and increase passenger comfort.
