For the first time in the country's history, Vilnius Airport has surpassed Riga Airport in monthly passenger numbers.

"More passengers boarded and disembarked at Vilnius Airport than at Riga Airport [in May]. A milestone we hardly dared expect to reach three years ago," Simonas Bartkus, chief executive of Lithuanian Airports, wrote on Facebook.

Excluding transit passengers who do not leave the terminal, Vilnius Airport handled around 535,000 passengers in May, compared with approximately 499,000 at Riga Airport.

"Across all Lithuanian airports, May saw 734,400 passengers – up 8.5% on last year and a new single-month record, surpassing the previous high of 707,000 set in August 2025," Bartkus said.

A declining trend in charter flights was noted, though the number of passengers on scheduled services grew by 14% thanks to new routes.

Lithuanian airports were the leading network in the Baltic states in 2025. The combined Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga network held a 40.3% share of the Baltic regional market, welcoming more than 7.16 million passengers.
