Lithuanian intelligence investigates alleged leak of NATO summit security information

BNS 2023.07.13 09:23

After hackers posted on social networks what they claim to be sensitive details of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania’s intelligence service says the incident is under investigation.

“The situation is known, the incident is being investigated in cooperation with the responsible authorities,” State Security Department (VSD) spokeswoman Aurelija Vernickaitė told BNS on Wednesday evening.

A group calling themselves From Russia with Love claim to have gotten hold of classified information about the organisation of the NATO summit and its security plans. The details include the names of the officials in charge of the event, the routes of the delegations’ movements, the security systems used, etc.

The leak, which has not yet been authenticated by the VSD, contain some thirty documents, specifying the hotels where the heads of state and delegations were staying during the event, the times of their arrival at the airports, the names of the leaders’ security guards, the types of weapons they carried, and the specifications of their communications equipment.

The names of snipers from the police anti-terrorist operations team Aras have also been published, as well as the minutes of the meetings of the security group in the run-up to the summit, covering plans for airspace, traffic, and transit from Russia and Belarus restrictions.

Lukas Apynis, a cybersecurity specialist, told 15min.lt that the leak, if proved authentic, was not very dangerous because it happened after the summit.
