Lithuania’s tax reform passes first parliamentary hurdle

Lithuanian lawmakers on Tuesday gave their initial backing to a tax reform package after 72 lawmakers voted in favour, 31 were against and 22 abstained.

The package will now go to parliamentary committees for further consideration and will return to the main hall in the autumn.

A total of seven amendments were submitted to the Seimas, with proposals including an increase in taxes for the self-employed and those working with business certificates, as well as the introduction of an investment account and broader real estate taxation.

"The tax package is a solid step towards a fairer tax system, and will also contribute to economic growth thanks to the numerous incentives that have been provided for investments and small businesses," Finance Minister Gintare Skaistė told MPs when presenting the amendments.

In her words, the reform will make the tax system more convenient, allowing the tax burden to be spread across different forms of business and making tax payments more convenient.

In May, Skaistė said that if the government-proposed tax reform got stuck, Brussels would suspend payouts to Lithuania under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) plan.
