Lithuania recorded more than 4,000 cyber attacks in 2022, according to the Defence Ministry's National Cyber Security Report published on Wednesday.

It shows that the total number of recorded attacks remained similar to the year before, but the number of medium-impact incidents went down by more than 50.

No high-impact attacks were recorded either last year or in 2023.

"Contrary to the year before, the number of DDoS incidents has increased,” the report reads. “Of the total incidents recorded in 2022, 33 belonged to the medium category and were related to DDoS attacks and the distribution of malware to get access to communications systems and carry out malicious activities."

The majority of incidents were related to malware (1,795) and information gathering (1,005).

The number of incidents involving the distribution of spam and misleading information as well as DDoS attacks increased over a year.

"Information was collected from public sources on attempts to affect more than 130 publicly accessible websites. A pro-Russian hacker group claimed responsibility for the attacks," the document states.

The highest number of incidents was recorded in the areas of state and local government (564), security and defence (312) and business (159).
