BNS 2023.01.18 10:54

Lithuania last year recorded the lowest number of road traffic-related deaths since independence, the Transport Ministry said on Wednesday.

A total of 120 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2022, down from 148 in 2021 and 175 in 2020.

Lithuania recorded 43 road fatalities per million inhabitants last year, close to the EU average of the last few years.

The EU average number of road deaths per million inhabitants edged up to 45 in 2021, from 42 in 2020.

EU statistics show that Malta, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands have the lowest number of road deaths, with fewer than 30 fatalities per million inhabitants.

The number of pedestrian fatalities in Lithuania increased to 31 last year, from 28 in 2021, but the number of cyclist fatalities decreased to five, from eleven.

Lithuania was the only EU country to halve the total number of road fatalities between 2011 and 2021, according to the ministry.
