Lithuania to open Taipei trade office this week – media

BNS 2022.09.12 12:28

Lithuania is set to open its trade office in Taiwan this week, the South China Morning Post has reported.

The office, which comes short of a diplomatic mission, is set to start operating on Monday, the SCMP said, quoting Lithuania’s Deputy Economy Minister Jovita Neliupšienė.

The move is likely to cause additional friction with Beijing, which has downgraded diplomatic ties with Lithuania and imposed economic sanctions after the Taiwanese representative office opened in Vilnius last year.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory, claiming that the use of “Taiwanese” in the official name is an attempt to recognise the republic. Similar offices are named after Taipei, the capital city, elsewhere in the European Union.
