Lithuania hands protest note to Belarus over 'deliberate damage' to border fence

Lithuania on Tuesday handed a note of protest to Belarus over “repeated cases of deliberate damage" to the border fence.

In a press release, the Foreign Ministry said it had summoned a "representative of the Belarusian embassy to Lithuania", saying that “Belarusian officials are involved in damaging the barrier and helping irregular migrants” get to the border.

Such actions by Belarusian officials "constitute a provocation" and are "a flagrant violation of the Lithuanian-Belarusian Treaty on the legal regime of the Lithuanian-Belarusian state border", according to the press release.

"Lithuania strongly demands that Belarus take all necessary measures as soon as possible to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future," the ministry said.

Vilnius and Brussels have previously accused the Belarusian regime of being complicit in directing migration flows from Africa and the Middle East via Minsk to Lithuania and Poland.

In August, Lithuania finished building the fence and razor wire stretching for around 550 kilometres along its border with Belarus.

Lithuania's authorities say that attempts to damage the fence have increased, accusing armed and uniformed Belarusian border guards of being involved.

No one has been caught trying to damage the fence so far.
