This year, Ukraine’s Independence Day is also a holiday for Lithuania, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelenska in a video greeting to their Lithuanian counterparts.

“This year, Independence Day is not only our day. It is a holiday everywhere where Ukrainians are. And this day is also yours, dear Lithuanian friends, because you are our supporters,” Olena Zelenska said on Wednesday.

Ukraine is celebrating its Independence Day on August 24.

In the video shown at the Ukraine Centre in Vilnius, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called President Gitanos Nausėda, his wife Diana Nausėdienė and all Lithuanians “true friends”.

Zelenskiai padėkojo Lietuvai už pagalbą Ukrainai: jūs nedvejojote, kai reikėjo padėti, ir neskaičiavote, kiek tai kainuoja

“You did not hesitate when we needed help, you did not calculate the benefits and you did not calculate the cost. You gave us weapons when we needed them. You showed leadership in uniting Europe, and it was timely. You welcomed our people and made them feel at home,” said Zelensky.

Zelenska thanked her Lithuanian counterpart for setting up the Ukraine Centre in Vilnius, which “has become a real core of independence, because here our people feel at home - free, among friends, safe”.

“And we will never forget the warmth with which the people of Lithuania support our independence,” she stressed.

Zelensky and Zelenska ended the message in Lithuanian: “Glory to our Lithuanian friends. Glory to Ukraine, glory to all our heroes.”
