Lithuania’s government is considering increasing the number of young men being called up for the nine-month military conscription service.
Under the proposal to be considered this week, the number of conscripts per year would increase from 4,000 to 4,400. The number of military academy places would also increase from 200 to 400.
The number of non-military staff at the armed forces would also increase to 2,050, compared to the existing cap of 1,800.
Next year, three military bases will be built in Šiauliai, Vilnius District and Šilalė District, and around 150 additional contract personnel will be needed to maintain their infrastructure and to service the Lithuanian military units.
All these changes were approved by the State Defence Council in January. The new proposals are yet to be approved by the parliament.
