On Tuesday, international women’s day, several hundred people gathered outside the Ukrainian Embassy in Vilnius to express solidarity with Ukrainian women whose country is resisting Russian invasion.

People came with Ukrainian flags and sunflowers that have become a symbol of resistance to Russian aggression. They also carried placards, expressing support for Ukrainian women and calling on Russia to end the war.

“Today, in solidarity with Ukrainian women, we are well aware that every woman wants to feel safe, have every opportunity to realise her potential, be respected […]. But for Ukrainian women, all of these aspirations boil down to one thing – survival and making sure that their loved ones, children, and families survive,” Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said at the event.

According to her, March 8 is also an opportunity to remember the progress that Lithuania has made in the area of women’s rights.

“We should be happy and proud of what we already have so that we don’t forget that there are still things to be done,” Čmilytė-Nielsen added.
