Around 170 kilograms of what looks like cocaine were discovered in banana boxes received by two Maxima supermarkets in Riga, reports Latvia's public broadcaster LSM.

The police were informed about the discovery on December 23 by the security service of the Lithuanian-owned retail chain.

In all, 168 packages with white powder were seized by the police who are still investigating their content, according to LSM.

The suspected drugs were discovered in banana boxes that came to Latvia from South America. The police said they inspected other Maxima supermarkets in Latvia and contacted other stores that received bananas from the same batch.

Five searches have been conducted as part of the investigation, although no one has been detained, according to LSM.
