Taiwan president wants to visit ‘brave country’ Lithuania

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen says she would like to visit Lithuania, as the two countries push for closer relations despite objections from China.

Organising an official trip has been difficult during the pandemic, but once Covid-19 is over, President Tsai Ing-wen would like to visit Lithuania, because it is a “brave country”, she is quoted by Taiwan News.

Taiwan and Lithuania have agreed to set up each other's representative offices. The one in Vilnius would use the name ‘Taiwan’ instead of ‘Taipei’, a move that has enraged Beijing which considers the self-ruled island to be part of China.

China has recalled its ambassador to Vilnius and asked Lithuania to do the same.

A Taiwanese delegation visited Vilnius last month, while several Lithuanian MEPs joined the European Parliament's visit to Taiwan last week.
