Lithuania is marking the 28th anniversary since Russia completed the pull-out of its troops from the country's territory following the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

On Tuesday, a ceremony of raising the Lithuanian national flag will take place in Lukiškės Square in Vilnius and a minute of silence will be observed in honour of the fallen.

The celebration programme also includes a gun salute by the Lithuanian Armed Forces' Honour Guard Company and live performances by military bands in multiple squares in Vilnius.

The last military echelon of the Russian occupation army left Lithuania at 23:46 on August 31, 1993, ending a lengthy and difficult process of military pull-out from the country which had declared independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990.
