Russia summons Lithuanian ambassador, drafts ‘unfriendly country list’

BNS, LRT.lt 2021.04.28 09:30

Lithuania’s ambassador to Moscow has been summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vytautė Šmaižytė, spokeswoman for Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, told BNS on Wednesday.

"He will visit the Russian Foreign Ministry today," Šmaižytė told BNS.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and Slovak ambassadors after the four countries expelled Russian diplomats in solidarity with Prague.

Last week, the Czech government accused Russia's military intelligence agency GRU of involvement in the deadly 2014 explosion at an arms depot and subsequently expelled 18 Russian intelligence officers working under diplomatic cover.

Slovakia, the three Baltic countries and, later, Romania followed suit and expelled Russian diplomats in solidarity with Prague.

Lithuania has not yet received any details on Moscow’s so-called list of unfriendly countries that was published by Russian state media on Tuesday.

“Officially, the Foreign Ministry has not received any list. Therefore, we cannot comment on that,” according to Šmaižytė.

On Tuesday, a list of ‘unfriendly countries’ was shown by Russia-1, a state-funded media, which included the United States, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.

On April 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to draft the list that would place restrictions on the countries’ consular and embassy operations in Russia, according to TASS news wire.
