Lithuanian president thanks Poland ‘for defence of democratic values’ in Eastern Europe

On Wednesday, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis congratulated Poland on its Independence Day.

In his official message of congratulation to Polish President Andrzej Dudai, Nausėda thanked Poland for “the defence of democratic values, human rights and freedoms in our neighborhood”.

Nausėda also “thanked Poland for solidarity in ensuring the security of the Baltic region”, according to a statement issued by the president’s office.

He also highlighted the long-term relationships between Lithuania and Poland based on the “shared history of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth”.

According to the statement, the year 2020 marks “highly significant historic anniversaries that unite the two states” including “the 500th anniversary of the birth of Sigismund Augustus, the last Lithuanian and Polish ruler of the Jagiellonian dynasty”.

Meanwhile, the year 2021 “marks the 230th anniversary of the May 3 Constitution and the oath of allegiance of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth”, Nausėda said in the statement.

In his message of congratulation, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said Poland and Lithuania are "brotherly nations and historical allies".

"I am pleased with the active cooperation between the Lithuanian and Polish governments on all topics and at all levels," the message reads.

The prime minister also expressed his conviction that "cooperation in international organisations, especially in the European Union and NATO, will help ensure broad support for our joint proposals and political choices".
