Lithuania's population has grown for the first time in 28 years. Migration is the central factor, the country's statistics office said on Tuesday.

It released preliminary data showing that the resident population of Lithuania reached 2,794,300 on January 1, 2020, which is 145 people more than a year ago.

An increase in Lithuania's resident population was last registered in 1991, according to the statistics office.

In 2019, about 10,800 more people came to the country than left. More than half of the arrivals were repatriating Lithuanians.

However, natural growth remained negative, with deaths outnumbering births by some 10,700.

In 2018, Lithuania's population contracted by 14,900.
