Apartment building in Lazdynai. Architektų Street 65
After the Soviet forces took over the TV tower and the Radio and Television Committee Building, people who worked there did not just go home.
The first order of tasks was to resume TV broadcasting to the residents of Vilnius. It was decided to air the programme from a studio in the Supreme Council, the present-day parliament.
An antenna and a transmitter were brought from Klaipėda and, several days later, broadcasts were resumed. Initially, only in Vilnius – more equipment was needed to transmit them to the rest of the country.
A high-rise apartment building on Architektų Street was fit for the purpose: standing close to the TV tower and rising 16 floors above ground and outfitted with transmitters it was able to cover a much bigger area.
The broadcasts provided an alternative to the propaganda media that was managed by the Soviets.
