Press House. Laisvės Avenue 60
In April 1990, Soviet troops had already made attempts to storm the Press House, an office building that housed a number of press and radio newsrooms, but hearing about their plans, people gathered for a quickly arranged concert. This stopped the soldiers.
On January 11, 1991, volunteers once again came to defend the Press House. The attackers deployed tanks and armoured vehicles, the defenders used water hoses, barricades of desks and chairs, and Lithuanian tricolour flags.
People blocked the entrances. The Soviet soldiers were annoyed – they fired at the building and hit several people.
It was after the storming of the Press House that the singer-songwriter Vytautas Kernagis was invited to perform for the defenders of another strategic building, the Supreme Council.
