A joint team from the Polish and Lithuanian defence ministries is investigating the cause of a drone explosion in the Pasvalys district, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauėda said on Wednesday.

"There is additional information, but I would not like to get ahead of myself. A team has been set up by the Lithuanian Defence Ministry and the Polish Defence Ministry to investigate this incident," Nauseda, who is visiting Poland, told LRT.

He said the circumstances of the incident could be discussed only after official findings had been received.

The drone entered Lithuania from Poland on Sunday, crashed in the village of Juodžioniai in the northern Pasvalys district and exploded, with the debris damaging a car.

Lithuanian officials said the Ukrainian drone was carrying explosives.

Kyiv apologised for the incident, saying the drone might have been diverted by Russian electronic warfare measures.

According to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, their Polish counterparts did not detect the drone on their radars.

Polish news portal Polsatnews, citing sources in the country's defence ministry, reported that the drone had been launched from Lithuanian territory, about 30 km from the Polish border, and had not entered Polish airspace. The Polish Ministry of Defence later denied the report.

Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas has previously said that an integrated system for detecting objects in Lithuanian airspace should be partially operational by the end of 2027.

Following the incident, Lithuania also began talks with NATO on the possibility of shooting down drones without visual confirmation.
