The Latvian airline airBaltic has cancelled its planned summer season flights between Vilnius and Krakow, citing rising fuel prices and commercial considerations, the head of Lithuanian Airports said Tuesday.
“Yes, we have this information,” Lithuanian Airports CEO Simonas Bartkus told reporters, adding that the seasonal route had been scheduled to launch in June but will no longer operate this summer.
According to Bartkus, the Latvian carrier’s decision was influenced by higher fuel costs, which prompted a review of its flight network. He also said changes in the competitive environment may have contributed to the move.
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air continues to operate flights between Vilnius and Krakow.
airBaltic later confirmed that it will suspend the route from May 29, saying the connection was no longer commercially viable because of rising fuel prices.
The airline said affected passengers would be offered alternative travel options or ticket refunds.
The Vilnius-Krakow route was introduced for the 2024 summer season, but the airline decided not to continue operations after one season for economic reasons.
