Lithuania to continue denying Fico airspace access for Moscow flight

BNS 2026.04.21 10:09

Lithuania will continue denying Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico airspace access for a planned flight to Moscow for World War Two commemorations, a presidential national security aide said on Tuesday.

"I believe this is our consistent position. We certainly do not support the desire of states to improve relations with an aggressor state. Therefore, this is our very clear moral stance, which we are upholding," Matulionis told Žinių Radijas.

Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry told LRT.lt on Monday that the country did not receive an overflight request from Slovakia. However, the ministry did not elaborate whether Lithuania had made a decision to prevent airspace access for Fico.

Fico expressed outrage over the weekend regarding the Baltic states’ refusal to allow him to use their airspace for his journey to Moscow.

The Slovak prime minister also travelled to Moscow a year ago to mark Russia’s Victory Day, despite calls from European officials to boycott the event. This year, he has vowed to find an alternative route for the trip.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued to call for maintaining pressure on Russia and on Monday thanked the Baltic states for their decision to block Fico’s flight through their airspace.
