Lithuania moves emergency stockpiles away from Belarus border

BNS 2026.04.08 16:26

Warehouses holding emergency stockpiles of food, fuel and other goods will be relocated away from the Belarusian border by 2027, Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) said on Wednesday

“We will move them out of those border areas. Of course, construction and design processes take years, but 2027 is already the final stretch for relocating reserves from dangerous zones,” Aurimas Guščius, head of the NKVC Planning Bureau, told the Seimas Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday.

“Sixty percent of the reserves stored in warehouses near the Belarusian border have already been moved to central Lithuania. The civil protection reserves administered by the Fire and Rescue Department will be relocated in 2027, once two new warehouses have been built in central and northern Lithuania,” he added.

The state reserve is used in emergencies or crises, as well as in the event of mobilisation or the declaration of a state of emergency or war.

According to the State Audit Office, €12.6m was spent on accumulating and managing reserves between 2022 and 2025. The amount of money in the reserve, as well as the types, quantities and storage locations of supplies, is classified information.

A new state reserve warehouse will be built near the airport in Šiauliai, northern Lithuania, for nearly €2.3m. The contract was signed at the end of February, and the new warehouse, covering almost 2,000 sq m, is due to be completed by summer 2027.

In addition, preparations are underway for the construction of another state reserve warehouse, although its location has not been disclosed.
