Protest against LRT politicisation to be held outside parliament

A protest against changes to the Lithuanian public broadcaster will be held outside the parliament at 18:00 on Wednesday.

“Despite tens of thousands of you gathering at protests in December, the ruling majority is returning to a law that could politicise LRT,” said the Association of Professional Journalists (ŽPA), one of the protest organisers.

“This is a direct and rapid route to taking control of the public broadcaster that belongs to all of you – this time even including elements reminiscent of censorship,” it added.

Attempts by MPs from the Social Democrat-led governing coalition to fast-track amendments last year triggered several rallies outside parliament in December.

The largest demonstration was attended by more than 10,000 people, making it one of the largest protests in recent years.

After failing to pass the amendments under an expedited procedure, a parliamentary working group was formed to review the broadcaster’s governance.

The draft law prepared by this group has been expanded and has been criticised by journalists and academics for showing signs of censorship.
