Lithuania will seek election to 12 international bodies this year, including positions at the United Nations and its agencies, as it looks to expand its role in global governance.
The Foreign Ministry said Lithuania aims to secure seats on the UN committees on the rights of persons with disabilities and human rights, as well as on the Radio Regulations Board of the International Telecommunication Union for the 2027–2030 term.
For the 2028–2031 period, Lithuania is seeking membership on the UN Statistical Commission and the Intergovernmental Organization for International Carriage by Rail, known as OTIF. The government also wants Lithuanian candidate Aleksandr Kuzmenko to be re-elected as OTIF secretary-general, Vice Foreign Minister Vidmantas Verbickas told a government meeting in mid-December.
Lithuania is also campaigning for seats on the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the 2027–2031 term.
Additional goals include membership on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2028–2030 and 2031–2033 terms, a seat on the UNESCO Executive Board for 2029–2033, and membership in the governing body of the International Labor Organization for 2027–2030.
Lithuania also plans to nominate a judge to the International Criminal Court for the 2027–2036 term or later. Looking further ahead, the Baltic country is seeking a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2036–2037 and the presidency of the UN General Assembly in 2072.
