Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced on Tuesday his decision to lead a new government being formed after a ruling coalition was established.
"I wish to inform you that I confirm my determination to take responsibility for the formation of the new government and to serve as prime minister," Sinkevičius said on social media, adding that the country needed unity.
He will replace Inga Ruginienė, who has led the government since last autumn after Gintautas Paluckas' resignation amid a graft probe.
Sinkevičius was elected chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party in May.
He said the government will primarily focus on reducing the burden of rising prices and living costs, addressing social inequality and poverty, fostering economic growth, improving job quality and ensuring healthcare accessibility.
In the announcement, Sinkevicius also stressed the need to strengthen defence and said the country’s foreign policy “must be active, consistent and results-oriented”.
At least four ministerial changes are planned in the new government. The energy, health and agriculture ministries are expected to be taken over by the Democrats “For Lithuania” as it returns to the coalition, while the Social Democrats will take over the environment portfolio.
The new coalition will be led by the Social Democrats and will include the Farmers and Greens group and the Democrats “For Lithuania” as the two minority partners, with 75 out of 141 seats in the Seimas.
The three-party coalition agreement is expected to be signed this week.
