Longer truck queues expected in Lithuania after Poland shuts Belarus border

Traffic at Lithuania’s border with Belarus is expected to rise after Poland fully closed its border with Belarus ahead of the active phase of the Zapad 2025 Russia-Belarus military exercise, which begins on Friday, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (SBGS) has said.

“The situation at those crossing points has been fairly stable, but it will obviously change due to Poland’s decision. We cannot say today to what extent, but there will definitely be greater traffic,” VSAT spokesman Giedrius Misutis told BNS.

The president of Linava, Lithuania’s National Road Carriers’ Association, said Poland’s restrictions would mainly affect the small number of companies still transporting goods to Belarus, as well as carriers handling cargo transfers across the border.

“A small percentage of those who transport goods are finding it very difficult. It is also difficult for those who hand over cargo to the next carriers – the queues from there are still growing for them. But it should not have a major impact on Lithuanian carriers overall,” Erlandas Mikėnas said.
