Lithuanian ministers expect US to keep its promise of new sanctions on Russia

Several Lithuanian ministers have voiced expectations that the US will impose new sanctions on Russia if it fails to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by the set deadline, a promise made by President Donald Trump.

“I’m convinced it will. I mean, how else could it be? What would such warnings and signals be worth otherwise? The sanctions must be enforced. This is a matter of credibility,” Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys told reporters in Vilnius.

Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė said it was time for the US to act.

“Will this be yet another postponement […] or will we finally see action? We need that action,” she told reporters.

US President Trump has given Russia until Friday to make progress toward ending the war or face fresh sanctions.

The White House has not yet announced what specific steps it would take on Friday, but Trump has previously threatened to impose secondary tariffs on countries that trade with Russia, such as China and India.

On Wednesday, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
