Regular passenger ferry service on the Neris River launched Friday in Vilnius, as the capital introduced its first electric boat, Rytas, as part of its public transportation network.

“Passenger navigation on the Neris will contribute to a more sustainable environment, promote convenient mobility and tourism, and gradually become an important part of public transport,” said Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

Rides on Friday are free of charge.

Starting Saturday, a 90-minute electronic ticket will cost €3, or €4 if purchased onboard. All discounts and fare exemptions applicable to city public transport will also apply. Riders can use the JUDU/Vilniečio card, the m.Ticket and Trafi mobile apps, or pay onboard via contactless payment or the JUDU self-service system.

On Friday, Rytas operates from 15:00 to 22:00, running non-stop between the King Mindaugas and Verslo Trikampis docks.

Beginning Saturday, the ferry will operate daily from 14:00 to 20:00, stopping at five locations: Verslo Trikampis, Žvėrynas Bridge, White Bridge, Green Bridge, and King Mindaugas Bridge.

The new electric ferries are modern, sustainable catamarans specifically designed for urban inland waterways. Each vessel is accessible to people with disabilities and includes space for bicycles. They have 32 seats – 28 inside and four on the deck.

Each boat is equipped with free Wi-Fi, onboard digital displays with trip information, and security cameras. Over 80% of the deck is covered, providing protection from sun and rain. Solar panels installed on the roof supply power to onboard systems.

A second boat is currently being tested in Riga, while two additional ferries are expected to arrive in the autumn after production and trials are complete.

All four vessels will form a complete river-based public transit network for the city.
