On Thursday, Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas called the inauguration of the German brigade “a baptism of our common defence commitments”.
“Our cooperation is taking place not only in the area of defence, but is also happening in the area of economy,” Paluckas told reporters at the Seimas in the run-up to the inauguration ceremony.
“We will certainly talk to the chancellor about German investments and German support in the European corridors to Rail Baltica and North Rail, and the latter could be connected to Rail Baltica in Finland, closing the corridor from Norway and connecting the Baltic countries," he added.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will attend Thursday's inauguration of the German 45th Armoured Brigade, also known as the Lithuania Brigade, in Cathedral Square in central Vilnius.
According to the prime minister, he expects to discuss defence and economic cooperation and the Rail Baltica project with Merz.
