Skype, the pioneering Estonian communications app launched in August 2003, was shut down on Monday.
Microsoft, which bought the app in 2011 from eBay for around 8.5 billion US dollars, said it was refocusing on developing MS Teams, according to the Estonian public broadcaster ERR reported on Tuesday.
Despite its sweeping success, the app had started losing market share to competitors like Zoom and Google Meet, the ERR wrote. Since 2011, the app’s 150 million monthly users had dropped to around 23 million in 2020.
Users will be able to access MS Teams using their Skype login details, Microsoft has said.
