A group of migrants have pelted Lithuanian border guards with sticks and stones after they were blocked from entering from Belarus, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Monday.
The incident took place overnight from Friday to Saturday in the Lazdijai District. According to the VSAT, a group of migrants brought a ladder in an attempt to climb over the border fence.
Migrants then started throwing stones and sticks at the border guards who arrived at the scene, VSAT said.
"Soon afterwards, the migrants went back to Belarus. The Lithuanian border guards were not injured in the incident," the border service said.
On Saturday, a similar case was recorded in the same section of the country's border with Belarus, VSAT said.
A total of 628 irregular migrants have been refused entry to Lithuania this year. Last year, 1,002 attempts were made to enter the country from Belarus via non-designated areas.
Lithuania adopted the policy of so-called pushbacks after an influx of migrants from Belarus in 2021. At the time, the Minsk regime opened an irregular migration corridor to Lithuania and Poland in response to sanctions, which were placed in the wake of the brutal crackdown on the opposition in Belarus.
