After Belarus announced that it had detained a US national who crossed illegally from Lithuania, the country’s border guard service says he has nothing to do with the events in Pabradė training area where a search continues for a missing US soldier.

On Monday, Belarusian Customs reported that an American man, 27, was found in an empty train carriage in Molodechno, having entered Belarus from Lithuania, and was detained for illegally crossing the Belarusian border. An investigation is underway.

“He is in no way connected with the events at the Pabradė training area,” Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Tuesday.

According to the VSAT, the person was staying in Lithuania legally for a couple of weeks. Lithuanian border guards talked to him at the border with Russia on March 26 and also at the Kybartai railway station on the border with Belarus and in the vicinity of the Kena railway station on March 27 and 30, respectively.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces announced on Monday that three of the four US soldiers went missing at the Pabradė training area last week were found dead in their M88 Hercules armoured vehicle. The vehicle was pulled out of a swamp after almost a week of search and rescue work.

The search for the fourth missing US soldier continues.
