As US officials continue peace talks with Russia and Ukraine, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda says he believes Moscow is merely stalling for time and not genuinely seeking an end to the conflict.
“I really want to believe that US President Donald Trump’s authority over the Kremlin’s master Vladimir Putin is so great that he will truly seek an agreement,” Nausėda told reporters on Wednesday.
“We can already see that this isn’t going to be easy. We see Russia’s inconsistency and the preconditions it is setting, which clearly show that Russia is trying to buy time,” he added.
In an interview with Newsmax on Tuesday, Trump admitted that the Russians could be “dragging their feet” on a Ukraine peace deal, adding that he himself had used the same tactic in the past.
Nausėda believes that the US should reconsider its approach to Moscow once it has seen through Russia’s tactics.
“If Russia keeps acting this way, I think that, at the end of the day, we will all see that the reason or the barrier preventing any agreement – the main stumbling block – is Russia itself,” the Lithuanian president insisted.
“And once the US administration understands this, I believe its approach to the Kremlin regime may change,” he added.
