The number of Lithuanians who left their country was at its lowest last year ever since 1990, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday, citing preliminary data from the State Data Agency.
A total of 9,486 Lithuanian citizens left the country in 2024, while 18,934 people returned.
Most returnees came from the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
The Foreign Ministry noted that for the past five years, more citizens have been coming back than leaving.
Last year’s annual survey of the Lithuanian diaspora found that 22 percent of respondents plan to return, while another 57 percent do not rule out doing so.
The main reason for returning is family and friends in Lithuania. Many respondents also said they feel most at home in Lithuania, appreciate the high quality of life, want to work and contribute to the country’s development, and see positive changes happening there.
