A consortium of Lithuanian universities, research centres, and public and private sector companies signed a cooperation agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius on Tuesday.
The consortium for the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) programme in Lithuania is led by Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) and includes the Kaunas University of Technology, Klaipėda University, Vilnius University, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, the Lithuanian Energy Institute, Ignitis Group, Lithuanian Railways, Novian, and Euromonitor International – Eastern Europe.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Gitanas Nausėda said the partnership with MIT underscores Lithuania’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent, fostering a culture of excellence, and investing in innovation.
“Participation in the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives programme has the potential to reshape not only Lithuania’s academic and scientific landscape but also the very foundation of our economy,” the President’s Office quoted him as saying in a press release.
“It positions our country as a hub of innovation – a nation increasingly recognised for its contributions to high-tech industries, cutting-edge research, and groundbreaking solutions to global challenges,” he said.
VDU Rector Professor Juozas Augutis called the partnership a recognition of Lithuania’s potential, saying the programme will strengthen transatlantic ties, boost the country’s global visibility, and help attract foreign investment and talent.
“The planned forms of cooperation include joint scientific and artistic research, technology and business projects, innovation development, international mobility for scientists and students, STEAM and entrepreneurship lessons in Lithuanian schools or STEAM centres, training, MIT student internships in Lithuania, and more,” VDU said in a press release.
“Special programs in areas such as artificial intelligence and climate change are also being considered,” it added.
MIT consistently ranks among the world’s top universities, frequently holding the number one spot in various rankings.
