Vilnius is planning to increase its public transport ticket prices, with some of them almost doubling.
The price of a single 30-minute ticket is expected to rise from €0.65 to €1.25, while a 60-minute ticket price would go up from €0.90 to €1.75.
The price of a monthly ticket would rise by €16 to €45. Meanwhile, an annual ticket would cost €480, which is an increase of €170.
New ticket types would also become available. These include a family ticket costing €3.5, as well as tickets for groups of 10–15 and 16–25 people.
All the existing discounts would remain in place under the current system.
The public transport system in Vilnius has been undergoing changes for years, said Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė, head of the municipal transport company JUDU. Since 2017, around 460 new vehicles have rolled out on Vilnius streets, she noted.
“This year, an additional 36 new trolleybuses are planned. [...] By the end of 2027, we plan to have no more old trolleybuses in Vilnius, and the bus fleet will also be upgraded,” Levulytė-Staškevičienė said.
However the public transport ticket prices in Vilnius have not been revised since 2013, the JUDU head stressed.
According to the municipality, the price increase would raise additional funds to improve the quality and development of public transport services.
If Vilnius Council approves the fare increase, the municipality will collect an additional 20 million euros each year, said Levulytė-Staškevičienė.
According to the municipality, last year JUDU collected around 34 million euros in fares and also received 84 million euros in subsidies from the city budget.
If approved, new fares would come into force on July 1.
